Join It’s OUR Healthcare’s 48 Hour Vigil; Special 2 Hour Artists’ Time!

October 12, 2007
After several weeks of special session negotiations, Governor Schwarzenegger announced his own health care bill on Tuesday October 9, 2007 during an afternoon press conference; this bill is not representative of special session negotiations but rather the creation of the Governor. Unfortunately, the bill he presented was very similar to his initial bill in January and does not solve the problem of affordability. The Governor’s bill requires that all Californians have health insurance, however, his plan does not provide low-cost health insurance to individuals who earn more than $25,000 or families with household incomes over $50,000 who don’t qualify for employer based coverage; this is a problem for artists as many artists make a modest living but don’t have enough extra income to afford mandated health coverage.

In response, It’s OUR Healthcare has organized two 48-hour vigils in San Francisco and Los Angeles, starting at noon, Wednesday, October 17th and ending at noon, Friday, October 19th to show Governor Schwarzenegger the importance of affordable health care to Californians. It’s OUR Healthcare has set aside a two hour time slot for artists in the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas Wednesday October 17 from 2pm to 4pm. Artists United for Healthcare encourages its members to join It’s OUR Healthcare this coming Wednesday to make signs, share stories, and reflect on artists’ need for affordable health care.
